Ingredients
  

Chocolate Cake Batter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Fudge Topping

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cups boiling water

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until a thick batter forms. Spread batter evenly in the baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, additional granulated sugar, and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cake batter.
  • Carefully pour boiling water over the top. Do not stir.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the center is just set. The top should be cakey with a thick fudge layer underneath.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

This dessert is best enjoyed fresh and warm, but leftovers can be stored in the fridge and reheated gently to bring back the gooey texture.
